2010 Show Cow/Calf of the Year
American Highland Cattle Association
We are so excited to have the honor of owning the 2010 Show Cow/Calf of the Year. Aila is a 5 year old cow that has been a joy to have on the farm. This award has just been an added bonus to having her here.
We thank Mary and Ed Larson of Circle ME Ranch who sold us Aila as one of a pair of weanling heifers to get our herd started.

Flatland Farm, LLC was established in 2001. We raise registered Scottish Highland Cattle, and Champagne D’Argent and Crème D’Argent rabbits. Our cattle are 100% grass fed. We do not feed additional protein of any sort. We feed a free-choice loose mineral. They are on pasture as much as possible in the spring/summer/fall and receive high quality grass hay when grass is not available. Our rabbits are fed whole oats and alfalfa hay.
 We sell the highlands as breeding stock and we sell our beef by the quarters or halves when we have them available. We also have hides and skulls available. We sell rabbits as breeding stock, or as meat rabbits which can be ordered ahead of time. We try to do things as naturally as possible on the farm. We do not use unnecessary chemicals for vegetation control or on our animals. We use Spalding Fly Predators (natural, safe wasps that parasitize fly pupae) to help control flies, and have recently added an all-natural flyrepellent to our pest control. We will soon be adding chickens to further help in our management of the flies. We compost the manure that collects when the animals are not on pasture to use on our pastures and garden.
We feel it is important to share what we have with others who may not have the opportunity to live on a farm and understand the importance of knowing where their food comes from. We hope to add chickens to the farm soon, and possibly a few hogs at some point in the future. We work with  kids when we have the opportunity, to allow them to experience being around the different animals we have. Some come out regularly, others may only get to come out once or twice. But we hope that we are able to allow them an experience they won’t soon forget.
